About this project
This was my first project using a wood lathe. (Well, assuming you don’t count my brief intro creating a wooden ring.) This was made around the same time I created a bunch of custom rings, so I thought it’d be a good idea to make a little box to hold them which wouldn’t require me to buy hinges. I first took a piece of Australian jarrah and turned it into a cylinder. After turning down one side to create a section to mount to, I parted the cylinder into two pieces. I took the piece I had just parted off and hollowed it out, then carved in an inner lip. I then did something similar with the other side, using trial and error, shaving out the rim of the cap until I got a nice snug fit between the bottom and the cap.
Once I was happy with the fit, I rounded out the top of the cap and parted it off. After sanding and applying finish, I was very happy with the end product, and my newly-made rings now had a new home!
